Hey there everyone! I have talked to many of you about up coming classes at Tri, and many of you want to know what comes after Beginning and Advanced Wedding photography. Well, currently at Tri, there isn't anything after those. Consider those classes like Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. These classes are offered each semester, and they are always the same classes.
With this in mind, I spoke to Alan (our director at Tri) about the possibility of creating a NEW wedding photography class, and he thinks that would be great. My question to you would be "What haven't we covered in these classes that you would like to learn more about?" Leave me a message in the comments. I probably have until the end of the week to come up with a rough outline, but I am asking you, my students, to help design it with relevant information you would like to learn. Beginning Wedding and Advanced Wedding aren't going away, so this new class would need to have brand new content to be accepted. Is there more specific Photoshop/Lightroom that needs to be covered, shooting information? Or hell, does it even need to be wedding related? What do you want that you haven't gotten or seen offered from Tri?
Go!
Frank
I would like to see more shooting outdoors with existing light (no flash). More techniques and effects. Also with all sorts of model types, couples, children, families, scenery, sunsets. Would love to hear and try different techniques and styles. Selina (your Tuesday night student)
ReplyDeleteHi Frank. is an EXCELLENT ! ! !idea to have more specific " hands-on " in this new class " Mastering Wedding photography" the student going to have the opportunity to learn ON FIELD, the trics and strategies how to go step by step the images " MUST HAVE " in a wedding. Hiring models and MUAs( TPF ) Knowing parks, churchs, and other locations where and how to take better photos. In this UNIC course, the student going to have extrem challengers to take pictures under ANY weather conditions, on locations AT ANY TIME. using what is been learn in beggining and advance wedding photography. IN ORDER TO HAVE AN excellent IMAGES. with your creativity and entusiasm I'm sure this course goin to be the onu NO-ONE WANT TO MISS.

ReplyDeleteLoving the idea of av. light shooting, however I woul like to get some more instruction on posing. I mean I took a class on posing at Tri, however I ended up learning much more about settin up lights than posing. Don't get me wrong, I learned a lot, just not a lot about posing models. I love the models in the adv. knot tying class, and I would love to be able to have a wedding class where there was a lot more of posing bride and groom.
ReplyDeleteDid I ramble? I ramble sometimes...
Thanks,
Dave
"What do you want that you haven't gotten or seen offered from Tri?"
ReplyDeleteHow 'bout a class has nothing to do with weddings specifically, but may help the wedding shooter in general? How 'bout a class where every class is a field trip and every field trip is a new location? How 'bout a class where we explore places around the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles, etc. I think you know where I'm going with this.
How about a weekend photowalk class? It would be a great opportunity to discover and shoot in interesting places every class. We could shoot with or without models. Some could use ambient light others could use speedlites. Whatever moves us. It would be a great way to get inspired or stay inspired.
Just my two cents.

I agree with the last post...a photowalk class (preferably with models-male and female) shooting on locations with available light and/or speedlights. Just a chance to get creative and some realworld, out of the studio photo shooting.... :>)
ReplyDeleteA photowalk class sounds great..maybe every other class so we can come to class and go over what we shot, the problems, the highs, the lows and everything in between. but it does need to be a weekend class so that we may have different lighting/weather opportunities. or attend an event together. take the road less traveled and be inspired...Maria-heaven_224
ReplyDeleteI am obviously a big fan of the photowalk concept. I absolutely love it as a matter of fact, and Jeffery Saddoris and I are hosting the first "Faded and Blurred Photowalk" in Venice on August 29th. Please plan to be there, more details coming very soon. This will be the first, plan on having them about every 2 months. The next 1 will be in Downtown L.A., thinking October. These will be done outside of Tri. Please keep in mind that my classes will be at night during the week, as I still need weekends free for weddings and family things, so available light classes and photowalks may not be a viable option for me. But who knows? Never the less, we WILL be doing lotsa photowalks...
ReplyDeleteI understand. Makes little sense to have a photowalk class midweek as the nights are getting longer. The non-Tri photowalk sounds like a great idea, nevertheless. Count me in!

BTW - Great idea to ask students what kinda stuff they want to learn. Would'a done better in school years ago if the teachers/profs just asked me. ;-)
Theres plenty of bride and grooms out there that can't afford a decent photographer. Can't we put the word out to these people to let us come and shoot their wedding with the understanding that there will be a lot of students joining them.. I know that would be hard but it sure would be nice to get real life photography going. I know I sorry, I always think of the impossible..Trouble-maker
ReplyDeleteYes I think more hands on would be great!!! Posing, lighting; more real world experience! In the field type of stuff! thanks frank!!!!
ReplyDeleteFrank, I think this is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI would like to see something just more advanced in general for folks already starting their photo business and needing more branding, shooting techniques and of course shooting models in available light would be icing on the cake!

I like the idea of having more hands-on in the field of posing for portraits. For example- couples, wedding parties, singles (head shots & full body), and family portraits. It would be nice to learn more and share others ideas in posing in all these situations. Thanks, Unfading Image.
ReplyDeleteSome of the business side of wedding photography could be included in a new class. I like the ideas above also.
ReplyDeleteWell we dont have a CS3/4 PREMIERE PRO class.
ReplyDeleteThat is something i would love to learn!!!
Future of DSLR's Video manipulation :)
COBRAPRODUCTIONS :)
I'd like a class with more out of the class experiences. Fieldtrips to local parks, churches, etc. where we use what equipment we have or don't have but we learn to make it work. Throw in some variety of models besides beautiful & young(as in real life)and we have to learn angles & posing too.
ReplyDeleteThe photo walks sound like a great way to be inspired, looking forward to those.

Wow! I would love to see stuff that helps us tie everything together. Maybe stuff like going out on location, sometimes wedding related, sometimes not. Then take our photos into the classroom, review them, talk about which ones are good and why and discuss how they could be better. We could walk through a workflow of how to manage our photos, how to pick the best ones and what to do with them after that.
ReplyDeleteI can envision us developing whole start to finish workflows.
Maybe another really cool thing (maybe incorporated into this or some other class) could be to develop work groups of people. Something like Frank assigns different groups to follow through on a specific scenario, like a wedding or a birthday or sporting event or Senior portraits, or an Engagement shoot etc. etc. A lead person is chosen as the "Photographer" and is in charge of assigning tasks to the rest of the group, like as assistants, second shooter, set coordinator, post production, v.a.l. and so on. This group then proceeds to complete this assignment from start to final product. This of course could take several class days for each assignment.
I really like the other suggestions mentioned by everybody else also, I think you may have enough material for multiple new classes.
Also I just thought, why not consider making the photo walks part of TCP, that way when TCP students attend they can get school credit for it.
Thanks for letting us contribute Frank.

I'd like some time devoted to the "Psychology of the Shot" meaning what was the photographer thinking prior to, during, and after to create the shot he/she had in mind. How is this all accomplished in a split second. The light, the camera/flash settings, the pose, etc.
ReplyDeleteill to Learn how to do Closeup / macro.
ReplyDeleteI love the concept of having a Photo walk; my only concern is having it on Saturdays, and for some of us who work doing weddings or assisting on weddings Saturday does not work. Anyway, as I sit back and reflect on what will make you a different photographer and stand out from the rest of the competition, all that comes to mind is learning the different styles that are out there by that I mean, photojournalism, getting comfortable with two or three different posses that will be your trade make, finally, learning what sells. How about instead of having a photo walk we have an all day photo shoot, by this I mean having different stations, one station is going to be photojournalism, the next station is going to be posing, the third is going to be glamour and so on.
ReplyDeleteI personally would like to see more about setting a workflow. from taking the photos to post processing along with advertising etc. The available lighting sounds like a good idea too.
ReplyDeleteBrian-
geez, lots of great stuff... i'm all about the using what you got thing!!! and i love what dread was saying, personally, besides the posing i would love to see some workflow stuff as in lightroom to photoshop and back instruction. being as i just saw the light(room)!
